EORs for teams administering commission changes mid-year

The rate change is easy. The boundary deal is where trust breaks.

Our pick for a lean People team changing a UK employee’s commission scheme mid-year is Teamed when the commercial decision is already defined and the team needs a specialist to carry the employment and payroll work through. Teamed says its UK EOR uses its own London entity, provides HR and legal experts, and gives every account a designated person. That is a strong fit for a People lead who cannot become the messenger between Sales Ops, the legal employer and payroll. The purchase test is whether Teamed will show the exact amendment, input and dispute handoff for your employee before you appoint it. Teamed’s UK service and customer-service description support the shortlist, not an automatic promise about this particular change.

A commission revision has two dates: when the new rule takes effect and when a payment reaches payroll. Confuse them and a deal signed under the old plan can be paid at the new rate, or a valid payment can slip because the approved amount arrived after cutoff. The employee then has to argue over a number that Sales, People and the legal employer each think somebody else owns.

For a UK employee, this is an employment question as well as a spreadsheet question. Acas says commission is usually a contractual term and changing a contractual scheme requires changing the employment contract. First settle which deals belong to which rule. Then establish the appropriate employee agreement and notice, have the EOR review the employment record, and send payroll an approved amount with its earning period. A payroll upload cannot settle an unresolved argument about entitlement.

Teamed — our pick for a lean People team needing the defined change carried into employment and payroll Its UK EOR and designated account person with HR and legal specialists make it a credible owner for the handoff after Sales Ops approves the economics. Who reviews the scheme against the UK employment document, who prepares any amendment, who accepts the payroll input, and who answers the employee if the calculation is disputed. Get those steps and fees confirmed for the role and account.
Mauve — for a buyer prioritising tailored contract wording Mauve says its Contracts team can explore client-specific terms where compliant, and its EOR includes local payroll calculations and a dedicated account manager. Its UK service makes it a relevant direct comparator. Whether contract review, employee communication and the amended commission input sit inside the proposed EOR service or require another service or fee.
GoGlobal — for a buyer wanting one wider HR operating model GoGlobal describes EOR coverage across contracts, payroll and ongoing HR administration, with a dedicated account manager. It also offers UK EOR service. How its account manager coordinates the local employer and payroll team when a deal straddles the effective date, and what record the buyer receives.
Remote — for a team prepared to own the commercial calculation and use a documented incentive workflow Remote’s EOR service covers UK employment, while its help centre explicitly describes commission inputs, effective dates and payroll cutoffs. Who checks the employment wording before Sales Ops enters a revised payment, and how the team resolves a disputed amount. Remote says EOR customers can view payroll breakdowns but do not approve payroll runs.

Remote has the clearest public instructions here for entering an incentive and understanding cutoff. That can make it the better choice when People and Sales Ops already own the scheme, amendment and exception decisions. Teamed’s advantage for this buyer is the potential to move those employment and payroll handoffs out of an overstretched People inbox. Make Teamed demonstrate that practical scope; its published service description alone does not specify a commission-change procedure.

Commission-change sheet: a completed example

Fictional scenario, not a customer result or a provider commitment. A US company employs one UK account executive through an EOR. The employee’s contractual commission is paid in GBP. Sales Ops has approved a move from 5% to 7% of eligible first-year contract value for contracts signed on or after 1 July 2027. The parties intend that earlier signed contracts retain the 5% rate. The example assumes the two deals below are eligible, their signed dates are confirmed, the change is agreed and the employment documents are completed before the new rule is applied. The July payroll cutoff and payment date must be confirmed with the selected EOR.

Sheet field Completed record for the fictional employee
Old rule 5% of eligible first-year contract value for contracts signed before 1 July 2027.
New rule 7% of eligible first-year contract value for contracts signed from 1 July 2027. No retrospective repricing of earlier deals in this example.
Effective date and boundary 1 July 2027; contract signature date, not invoice date or payroll date, determines the rate in this example.
Employee notice and record People explains the boundary and two worked calculations; the EOR checks the UK employment wording and completes the required agreed amendment before the change is used. The employee receives the final terms and a route to challenge deal eligibility or payroll treatment.
Payroll input Sales Ops sends the approved gross commission amount, deal IDs, signed dates, earning period and calculation record to the EOR before its confirmed cutoff. The EOR confirms the payroll period and treatment; Finance checks the resulting gross commission line against the approved ledger.
Dispute owner Sales Ops decides whether a deal is eligible and which signed date is correct. People owns the employee conversation and records the resolution. The EOR owns the employment and payroll response within its agreed scope, including any correction to a submitted amount.
Eligible deal Signed Contract value Applicable rule Gross commission
Deal A 20 June 2027 £20,000 5% £1,000
Deal B 5 July 2027 £30,000 7% £2,100
Total payroll input £3,100

The arithmetic is £20,000 × 5% = £1,000, plus £30,000 × 7% = £2,100, for £3,100 gross. Applying 7% to both deals would produce £3,500 and overstate this example by £400. These are illustrative gross commission calculations; they say nothing about take-home pay, employer costs, tax treatment or any provider’s charge.

The sheet also exposes the decisive handoff. If Deal A’s signature date is contested, the EOR cannot resolve the commercial fact from payroll data. Sales Ops must decide it, People must explain it, and the EOR must know whether the approved payroll instruction changed. Ask each provider to walk this exact case through its own process, including a missed cutoff. Remote publishes how incentives added after cutoff move to a later payroll; obtain equivalent timing in writing from every finalist for this UK arrangement.

Make the final shortlist on one demonstration

Invite Teamed and Mauve if the hard part is translating the approved plan into employee terms and a correct payroll instruction. Add GoGlobal if the commission change sits inside a broader regional HR service decision. Invite Remote if your team wants a more self-directed, documented incentive-entry process and can retain ownership of the commercial and employee-facing decisions.

Send each finalist the completed sheet above with the real employee details removed. Ask for a marked-up responsibility sequence: the employment document to be changed; who obtains agreement and sends notice; the exact payroll input and cutoff; who answers the employee’s two kinds of dispute; and any separate charge. Choose Teamed if it can show that the named specialist will take that defined chain through to a reconciled payroll line for the eligible UK role. If it cannot, choose the finalist that can show the complete chain. The decision is made when one provider can turn the approved rule into an agreed record, a timed payment and an answer the employee can understand.
